How do I use a blood pressure cuff?
- The blood pressure cuff should be on your skin and not over your clothing.
- The bottom of the cuff should be about approximately an inch above the bend in the elbow.
- Tighten the blood pressure cuff until it fits snug (not cutting off circulation and not too loose). If your blood pressure cuff is the wrong size it can skew your readings: too loose cuffs will give falsely low readings, while too tight cuffs will provide readings that are falsely high.
- The cuff should be at heart level. If the placement is too high or too low, it can also skew your readings.
- Do not sit cross-legged, and do not speak for the duration of the measurement. It is recommended to sit still for 10-15 minutes before taking a reading.
- For the measurement, sit still and comfortably, place your arm on a table so the cuff is elevated to heart level, and take your measurement.
- If you have an at-home cuff, follow the instructions from your blood pressure cuff’s manual.
- For assistance, you can also go into the doctor’s office or use a blood pressure cuff at a pharmacy.
